The First Week of School

The First Week of School

Recently, a non-educator friend of mine (yes, I actually have some of those), asked me what the first week of school was really like. I tried my best to put it into words, but I am not sure that can actually be done. It's a mixture of emotions and nothing can really ever prepare you. Even starting my 13th year in education, I have been surprised multiple times this week.

I asked some staff, parents, and best of all, students, to help me finish this sentence...

The first week of school is like...

Office Staff

Cindy Savant
(Principal/Learning Stylist/Innovator/Amazing Artist)
The first week of school is like a box of chocolates! Just like the anticipation of the first day of school, you can't wait to open the box. In the words of Forrest Gump, "You never know what you are going to get." Yet, you savor every moment.

Kay Holloway
(Secretary/Guardian of the Building/Attendance Queen/Jack Jill of All Trades)
The first week of school is like a blind date, you never know what to expect until it's there and you can see how it's going to go.

Diane Barnett
(Office Manager/Photographer Extroidinaire/Mrs. Fix-it)
The first week of school is like the calm after a storm. All of the teachers are busy rushing like crazy to get ready the week before school starts, then on the first day of school, everything is in place and it is very calm and peaceful.

Jennifer Kriska
(School Nurse/Baseball Mom/Jokester)
The first week of school is like going to an amusement park; activity everywhere and a flurry of emotions. You go home completely exhausted, but ready to return the next day.

Support Staff

Debbie Hays
(PACE Specialist/Data Diva/Creativity Igniter)
The first week of school is like taking a big gulp of a frozen Slurpee!! You know you're going to experience brain freeze, but after a few minutes, in this case, a few days, your brain stops hurting and things get back to normal.

Ben Porter
(Music Teacher/Songwriter/Purveyor of Fun)
The first week of school is like an explosion of colorful personalities. The children love to see us after a long summer break, and they are bursting at the seams with excitement for music class.

Laura Price
(Speech Pathologist/New Bobcat/Beaming with Enthusiasm)
The first week of school is like the first blooms in spring. It's exciting to watch and see how big and beautiful the flowers grow!

Renee Bueche
(ESL Teacher/Cajun Cook/Master of the Bueche Walk)
The first week of school is like a library filled with good books. Each child's cover is absolutely beautiful. Each child has an interesting story to be told. Each child has his/her own unfinished story yet to be written. I can't wait to spend time with each and every child and become better acquainted with the story that is uniquely his or her own.

Elizabeth Sandlin
(Instructional Specialist/Fashionista/Heart of Gold/)
The first week of school is like stepping onto a cruise ship headed for a well-anticipated voyage. It is both thrilling and exciting to see all the new and old friends who will be joining you on this remarkable journey together.

Teachers

Kimmie Nelson
(1st Grade Teacher/Music Video Star/New Wifey)
The first week of school is like playing whack-a-mole! As soon as you get one thing taken care of, another pops right up!

Paige O'Kelley
(2nd Grade Teacher/Theater Mom/Mentor of the Century)
The first week of school is like an iPad...with every app open at the same time.

Kristin Meggers
(ELC Teacher/Country Dancer/Social Butterfly)
The first week of school is like a magical adventure. You just never know what exciting moment might happen next.

Parents

Allison McFarland
(Awesome mom to 3rd and 1st grade Bobcats & two Bobcats in training/Rodan & Fields Rockstar)
The first week of school is like a river. You toss your kids in and pray they remember how to swim.

Lauren Doherty
(PTA Prez/Awesome mom to 5th and 1st grade Bobcats)
The first week of school is like ordering a pizza, you can't wait until it arrives and it is always better than you expected.

Kristi Schwartz
(Awesome mom to 2nd grade and Kinder Bobcats & one Bobcat alumni/Realtor Extraordinaire)
The first week of school is like a hurricane. Lots of preparation is required and there is a lot of anticipation and excitement. If you are prepared, it goes smoothly and if you are not prepared, it can be a disaster with lots of tears and frustration.

Saving the best for last...

Students

Ethan D.
(Beverly 5th Grader/Boy Scout/Creative Kiddo)
The first week of school is like a blender. You have all these different fruits and vegetables in there and they don't really go together. Then the year goes on and you mix it up and it becomes one blended creation like a class.

Katie S.
(Beverly 5th Grader/Artist/Laughter Lover)
The first week of school is like a mosaic. Up close, it is a blur, but when you take a few steps back and take a deep breath. It turns into a masterpiece.

Sophia P.
(Beverly 3rd Grader/Kind-Hearted/Teacher Kid)
The first week of school is like a blank piece of paper; looking at it feels like it's going to take a while, but once you get started, you really like it and you want to keep it going.

Camille H.
(Beverly 5th Grader/Entrepreneur/Creatures Against Cancer)
The first week of school is like a cat. It's all fluffy and cute until it bites you.
