The Friday Five: Favorite Words

Today we are sharing five of our favorite words!

When my mom and dad were in college at North Texas, they were both in the Greek system. My dad was a Fiji and my mom was a Chi Omega. My dad had a brilliant idea to write mystery love letters to her and send them to the sorority house to be read during the chapter meetings. The trick was, he didn't ever say who the letters were to or from. Each letter gave more and more clues to who the sorority girl might be and they were all signed "The Enigmatic Eagle". My mom is not the kind to want the spotlight and she said the minute they finished reading the first letter to the chapter, she was mortified because she knew it had to be him. What other college guy knew and used the word "enigmatic". Eventually, it was revealed that the letters were for her. As all her sisters oohed and ahhed, she probably tried to hide her head in the sand somewhere. Enigmatic is a cool word anyway, but this story makes it one of my favorites.

I honestly started liking this word because it was just fun to say. I also think it describes me pretty well. I have weird little quirks and things I don't like...well... just because. I am working on my persnicketiness, but some things like baked fruit are just never going to be my thing.

I use this one all the time, especially when I am stressed and having a hard time keeping everything straight in my mind. I will often tell people I am discombobulated and at that point, it is usually best for me to call it a day and take some time to chill.

I can remember being very little and using this word. Probably because my parents had to think of all kinds of different ways to tell me to calm down. I was a little wild, a little loud, and a little bit of a mess. Well, I guess not much has changed.

This word is pronounced, graw-dool. My parents both use this word and it is 100% made up. I have no idea where it really came from, they both just remember using it in college and that their friends often said it too. Sometimes it is shortened to "grodu" or we turn it into an adjective and say "groduly". I actually never thought about it not being a real word until I started writing this blog post.

That's it for the Friday Five! See you next time!
